Kearny Mesa is a major industrial and commercial center occupying a central location in the City of San Diego. The community meets employment, business and retail needs for a large portion of the City. The community has three residential areas: Kearny Lodge, which is located East of I-805 and north of Clairemont Mesa Blvd., Royal Highlands, which is located east of I-805 and south of Balboa Ave. and Stonecrest, which is located west of I-15 and south of Aero Drive. Kearny Mesa is named for the former Camp Kearny, a U.S. military base that operated in the area from 1917 to 1946 and eventually became Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.
